Cancer has struck on both sides of my family, so news about any event aimed at raising money for research and treatment always catches my eye.
Members of Boca Lago Country Club recently partnered with Duffy's Sports Grill for just such an event, and I stopped by on a weeknight to check out the action.
Duffy's patrons were given a chance to putt against professional golfers from Boca Lago and raise money for cancer research at the same time as part of the Putt for Dough event.
And the youngest golfers definitely stole the show.
Putt for Dough is one of several annual fundraisers organized by Boca Lago Country Club's cancer research unit that is run by club members and is part of the Papanicolaou Corps, the fundraising arm of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami.
"A lot of our members frequent Duffy's and this is a great way to help fund research and have a great time doing it," said Dave Shinnebarger, Boca Lago's sales and marketing director.
Ed Segala, the country club's head pro, said the competition from the younger set was no joke.
"I let the children win but usually try to beat the adults," Segala said. "A lot of the kids out here today needed no help whatsoever."
Anthony Kelleher, 9, of Boca Raton was one of the victorious putters. "I golf all the time, but I'm more used to hitting the driver and using a big swing," he said.
Duffy's donated 10 percent of meal purchases by patrons with Putt for Dough fliers to the research unit, but many of them stopped and wrote a check anyway.
Boca Raton resident Mike Gefter said he has been donating to the unit for years and didn't bat an eye about making a donation that night. "I believe very strongly in the group and everything they do and will continue to provide support," he said.
